Looking back to Water Solutions #2: Reuse, Recover & Recycle

On April 30th, we hosted our second webinar in the sub-thematic webinar series of 4. The webinar was showered with interest from over 660 participants spreading across 77 countries. The main focus of the webinar was to unravel some of the above mentioned solutions and share good practices from industries, cities and utilities with practical examples.

Six speakers shared their work, experiences and practices on the topic: Mark van Loosdrecht (Chair professor in environmental biotechnology, TU Delft), Jan-Willem Vosmeer (Sustaianbility Officer, Heineken), Dimitris Xevgenos (Innovation Manager, Zero Brine), Willemien van Asselt (Coordinator for International relations and Cooperation, Topsector Agri&Food), Nynke Hofstra (Assistant Professor Water Systems and Global Change, Wageningen University) and Hans Stielstra (Deputy Head, Directorate of Environment, EU).

Watch the video of the webinar and read the written report.

The Watson database provides a better picture of the emission routes of micropollutants in water

The Watson database collates monitoring data from water managers concerning micropollutants in influent and effluent from wastewater treatment plants. These data can serve as input for emission estimates for substances. These estimates can provide information regarding the origin of micropollutants that are hard to assess using other methods, as this article demonstrates for (the personal use of) over-the-counter pharmaceuticals for humans and pets. With the most recent update to the Watson database, it has also become possible to derive trends for some (groups of) substances, such as PFAS, from the time series of measurements: a useful tool for evaluating the effectiveness of policy measures.

Powerful stories at Internet of Nature podcast

Our PAC-member Dr. Nadina Galle has launched an interesting podcast: The Internet of Nature podcast. The Internet of Nature Podcast explores how increasingly ‘smart’ cities have embraced technology for mobility, lighting, and waste management, but have left urban ecology behind in the digital revolution. Each episode contains powerful stories behind innovators, delves into questions that are usually shied away from, and provides inspiration to grow your tech-driven nature-based enterprise.

This week Nadina talks to Dr. Mike Edwards from Sound Matters. Listen to the second edition here.

Brew a Better World ambitions inspires to raise the bar

As we could hear at our second webinar Water Solutions #2: Reuse, Recover & Recycle, Heineken raises the bar with new commitments on the environment, social sustainability and responsible consumption on a path to a net zero, fairer and healthier world.

On World Earth Day they have launched their 2030 Brew a Better World ambitions, raising the bar with 22 commitments including their ambition to become carbon neutral, equal pay for equal work, aiming for gender balance amongst our leaders, reaching a billion consumers each year with responsible consumption messages and zero-alcohol options always, everywhere.

Chairman of the executive borad and CEO Dolf van den Brink says: “Our new commitments are woven into the fabric of our balanced growth strategy, EverGreen, putting sustainability and responsibility front and centre as we write our next chapter. I want to thank our enthusiastic and committed employees for their continued passion for this topic. Together, we will do our part to brew a better world.”
