Being of great value for AIWW as one of our Sponsors, we asked Renée to give her view on the AIWW Conference 2019 themes and topics. This year’s main theme is the ‘Implementation of integrated solutions by cities, industries, utilities and financiers: from cases to bankable projects.’

The province of Noord-Holland is surrounded by water on three sides and most of its surface lies below sea level. The southern part of the province is highly urbanized and the northern part is characterized by open agricultural landscapes.

Our biggest challenge is adapting to the results of climate change. Weather extremes will occur more frequently in the future, but even now the consequences are noticeable, such as those of the 2018 drought. Climate change has consequences for the safety, health and quality of life in the province of Noord-Holland. This concerns longer periods of drought and heat, extreme rainfall and extreme storms. And above that, the sea level is also rising. The IPCC predicts a sea level rise of one meter around the year 2100.

We cannot deal with this alone so we maintain a strong partnership with other (water)organizations. Together with our partners we always go for smart solutions and innovations to preserve the province of Noord-Holland as a place to live, work and recreate.

Innovative and climate adaptive projects in our province are coastal reinforcements (Hondsbossche Duinen, Prins Hendrikzanddijk Texel), water storage facilities in rural areas and a combination of water storage and new energy solutions in Heerhugowaard (Stad van de Zon). All these projects are realized with water partners, municipalities and water experts. Integral solutions are our starting point.

We hope to learn from other organizations during the AIWW, share our projects, knowledge and intensify our partnerships.
